Made in Tel Aviv by Urban Outlines

Dizengoff Street is one of Tel Aviv's main streets. In the 50's and 60's it was considered the city's bohemian center, as well as its commercial and cultural core. The street is named after Meir Dizengoff (1861-1936), Tel Aviv's first and mythological mayor, who helped found the city and was known throughout his lifetime as the "city's father". Dizengoff worked to establish Tel Aviv's image as the "first Hebrew city" by nurturing the Hebrew language, demanding that the city's signposts be in Hebrew and convincing intellectuals and artists to move to the city. In 1934, in celebration of the city's 25th anniversary and his 73rd birthday, the street was named after him in a festive ceremony. The square in the middle of the street (Dizengoff Square) is to a great extent, the heart of Tel Aviv's "White City" - an area in the center of Tel Aviv, composed of more than 4,000 structures constructed according to the international style ("Bauhaus"). This is the largest concentration of these types of structure in the world and therefore, in 2003, UNESCO declared this area as a World Heritage Site. The international building style (known as "Bauhaus") was popular in Tel Aviv, mainly in the thirties. The style was characterized by asymmetry, flat roofs and straight windows. In Tel Aviv the style adopted another trade mark: round, corner balconies.
